According to Unicef, 1.2 million primary school-age children in Kenya are unable to attend school. At VWF, we know that children are the future of any community, so we began Victoria Watoto Schools in Mbita to meet this need. This private, Christian school is funded primarily through private donations/sponsorships.
Victoria Watoto Schools is centrally located in the city of Mbita, which is on Lake Victoria. We currently offer seven grades:
Baby Class, PP1, PP2, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. A 5th grade class will be added in January. Classes are taught by qualified teachers who are motivated by their love for the students and our mission.
We believe that making disciples who understand that the Kingdom of God is about radical generosity, servant leadership, peacemaking, etc. is what will change a community. Students receive discipleship training along with: core academics, crafts, music, art, scouts, and athletics. Students are provided with both an everyday uniform, as well as a PE uniform, shoes, a sweater, and two nutritious meals per day.
A 2016 study found that 32.9% of adults in the Suba region were infected with HIV/AIDS, which contributes to the abject poverty and the number of children being orphaned. Children in this region are severely undernourished with a child mortality rate of 247/1000 for those under five years of age. Families also struggle to obtain clean drinking water, and Lake Victoria is the source of drinking water, handwashing, and dishwashing in 95.1% of area households. Victoria Watoto School is committed to changing these statistics by providing all of our students with nutritious meals and clean drinking water.
When you partner with VWS, you do more than help a child, you help a community. Many of these children are orphaned and are being raised by grandparents and others who have little or no source of income. Other children come from large families, with single parents, or even two-parent homes where they struggle to make ends meet. Giving these children an education gives them the tools they need to have a better future and lessens the burden on their caretakers.
Your sponsorship of $40/month will feed and educate one of our deserving children. You can simply give a one time donation below, or contact us via our email address victoriawatoto2018@gmail.com for information about becoming a sponsor.
